The main benefit of JPG is its support for full 24-bit color and powerful compression scheme. This combination makes JPG best suited for photographs (color and grayscale) and images with continuous tone, e.g., gradients. Due to the lossy compression scheme, as the image is compressed, distortions in the image appear. This makes JPG bad for images with text and hard edges.
